Life Issue: Addiction

Life Issues Counseling – Introduction

Life Issues Counseling at Unbroken Covenant Cathedral is designed to bring healing, restoration, and transformation through the power of Jesus Christ and the truth of God’s Word. We recognize that life’s challenges—whether emotional, spiritual, relational, or behavioral—can feel overwhelming, but no struggle is beyond God’s redeeming grace.

Our counseling ministry is Christ-centered, Scripture-based, and led by compassion. We believe lasting change begins not with willpower alone, but with surrender to Christ and renewal through the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, biblical guidance, and loving support, individuals are encouraged to walk in freedom, wholeness, and purpose.

Life Issue: Addiction

Freedom Through Christ Is Possible

Addiction is a powerful struggle that can affect the mind, body, and spirit. It may involve substances, behaviors, or habits that seem impossible to break. Addiction often brings shame, isolation, and despair—but Scripture makes it clear that Jesus came to set captives free.

Addiction does not define who you are. In Christ, there is forgiveness, deliverance, and the power to live a transformed life.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me… to proclaim liberty to the captives.”
— Luke 4:18

Biblical Understanding of Addiction

1. Acknowledge the Struggle Honestly

  • Admit the problem without denial or excuse

  • Release shame by bringing the struggle into the light

  • Understand that confession is the beginning of healing

  • Accept God’s grace without condemnation

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.” (1 John 1:9)

2. Surrender Control to Christ

  • Recognize that self-effort alone is not enough

  • Invite Jesus to take full authority over your life

  • Submit daily choices to the Lordship of Christ

  • Trust God to do what you cannot do on your own

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

3. Renew the Mind With God’s Word

  • Replace destructive thought patterns with Scripture

  • Meditate on God’s promises daily

  • Speak God’s truth out loud to combat temptation

  • Allow the Word to reshape desires and decisions

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

4. Walk in Accountability and Community

  • Break isolation by seeking godly support

  • Walk with trusted believers who encourage truth

  • Submit to pastoral counseling or recovery support

  • Allow others to pray with and for you consistently

“Confess your faults to one another and pray for one another.” (James 5:16)

5. Remove Triggers and Replace Habits

  • Identify environments, relationships, or patterns that lead to temptation

  • Set healthy boundaries that protect your progress

  • Replace harmful habits with godly practices

  • Develop routines centered on prayer, worship, and discipline

“Make no provision for the flesh.” (Romans 13:14)

6. Depend on the Power of the Holy Spirit

  • Rely on the Spirit for strength in moments of temptation

  • Allow the Spirit to guide daily decisions

  • Trust God to produce lasting fruit in your life

  • Walk in obedience one day at a time

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

7. Persevere Through the Process

  • Understand that freedom is often a journey

  • Do not allow setbacks to lead to despair

  • Receive God’s mercy daily

  • Keep moving forward in faith

“He who began a good work in you will complete it.” (Philippians 1:6)

A Word of Hope

Addiction may feel strong, but Jesus is stronger. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in those who believe. You are not alone, you are not rejected, and you are not beyond redemption.

At Unbroken Covenant Cathedral, Life Issues Counseling exists to walk with you toward freedom, restoration, and lasting transformation. In Christ, chains are broken, lives are restored, and new beginnings are possible.

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
— John 8:36
